Phantom Pains

Severed Love

By Kelli Sheckler-AmsdenPublished 11 months ago 1 min read

My body ached for you today

stretched out cross the bed, like a corpse

I longed to hear the sweet words that you'd say

but you're gone, and that's useless, of course

I clung to the memory that you left behind

the ones where we promised forever

I've heard it said often that love is blind

always believing we would be together

No service or soil to mark our demise

only packed boxes and a text or two

Puffy red eyes from the tears that we've cried

and signed papers to prove, we are through

The aching too, will find its ending

like an appendage that's severed and gone

Phantom trembling remains as my mind's left pretending

another saga in a love that's gone wrong

Love is such sweet misery. Pity it’s such a hard road to travel. Beautiful and heartbreaking, Kelli!

  • Just as with a phantom limb, one tends still to feel it even after it is gone. Painfully well said, Kelli.

  • This was absolutely heartwrenching. Loved your poem!

Aww yes that heartache will get better overtime. Such a heartbreaking poem with deep symbolism.
