Passengers Are Advised

A Notice from the Station About Trains That Won’t Return

By Stephen StanleyPublished about 13 hours ago 1 min read

Passengers are advised that the night trains have slipped beyond the timetable

and that all departures scheduled for today departed yesterday

without waiting for their passengers to arrive.

There is no replacement service.

There is no alternate route.

Passengers are reminded that retrospective travel is prohibited

without the proper documentation.

For safety reasons, do not approach the platform.

Do not lean over the yellow line.

Do not attempt to retrieve memories from the tracks.

The tracks retain only what they choose to keep.

Please refrain from gathering in the terminal.

The benches have formally resigned from waiting duty.

The clocks have declined to keep sentimental time.

Standing in the old ticket queue will not reopen the destination.

Any luggage left unclaimed will continue on its assigned journey.

Any longing left unclaimed will be handled individually

by our certified disposal staff

in the wing of the station that does not appear on maps.

Staff apologize for the disruption

though they had no authority over the migration of platforms,

nor over the decision to discontinue service

between here and the place you meant to go.

If you purchased a ticket for yesterday,

refunds remain unavailable at this time.

If you purchased a ticket for tomorrow,

tomorrow has withdrawn its availability.

We remind passengers that no one boards,

and that no one disembarks,

and that responsibility for the final journey

has been transferred to the silence between announcements.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Thank you for your patience.

Thank you for believing there would be a last train,

long after the loudspeakers stopped promising one.

Loved what you did with this. So many ways to interpret. The feeling of disorientation is unsettling in that it makes more sense to me today than it should.
