Why write me so close to the edge?
What theme are you exploring with my life?
Again and again your characters meet this fate
Erase their adjectives: father, son, friend, whole
Rewrite their definitions
Until they are defined by nothing
I cannot understand this leaving
Even as so many leave us
So I inflict my thoughts on you
Sharpen plot points until they impale
Tell myself the story is going where it wants
Absolve myself of your fate
By pretending it’s fate
Just a priest taking your own confession
How many Hail Marys
For the mortal sins meted out
On your poor poppets
Stitched with faded ink?
There are those in your story who live
There are those in my story I’ve lost
Both of us at the mercy
Of other’s choices

A happy guy that tends to write a little cynically. Just my way of dealing with the world outside my joyous little bubble.

Thse last lines land like a left and right hook 👍
This has a beautifully captured sadness and sharpness to it. Very well written, Shaun. Always in awe of your incredible talent.
Wow, this piece really digs deep! It’s like you’re wrestling with the idea of fate and choices—both in stories and real life. Such a cool way to explore how we shape and lose characters. Definitely leaves you thinking!✨
It is a sad thing that some people come to stay and others to leave, perhaps to show us something in a certain season. Really felt these lines.
This is brilliant.
