Ola Speedy Gonzales
A Sonnet for a Warner Bros Creation
Some of us will be old enough to remember Speedy Gonzales, the cheeky but heroic Hanna Barbera mouse who graced television screens. No one could emulate his Ai Karambas and Yi Ai, Yi Ai, Andeles as he raced around trying to outwit predator cats.
August 29th is the day Speedy Gonzales made his television debut, and we celebrate the day by bringing to mind what he symbolizes. To this day, he represents joy.
With the way he fights villians and other challenges, he is also resilient. He always emerges victorious, no matter how insurmountable his obstacles seem. And being the cartoon icon he is, he’s forever happy.
So, ola, Speedy, your mousy name lives on. We celebrate it with a little sonnet.
He graces floors, with feet now running wild
He trounces fools with dulcet wit and charm
He grabs the cheese with cunning wit and guile
And takes down hapless foes who mean him harm
He scales high walls, with arms so swift and free
He never gives his space to abject woes
His Ai Karamba, sounds with gloating glee
His wit will keep them running on their toes
He always triumphs over greatest odds
His spirit always ceaseless, never dies
His truth emerges through the endless fog
He always graces danger, never sighs
He always meets with challenge with a smile
His happy feelings firm and not erstwhile.
