Oh, Lorelei

By Julie O'Hara - Author, Poet and Spiritual WarriorPublished 3 months ago 2 min read

Verse 1:

I was cruising down the Rhine on a Tuesday, feeling fine,

With a thermos of chocolate and my schedule right on time,

When the moon did a shimmy and the water wrote a line,

There she was on the rock like a neon warning sign.

Gold hair, river glare, comb sparkling like a star,

Humming something catchy on a ghostly steel guitar,

My rudder did a cha-cha, my compass went awry,

And my GPS just sighed: “You’ve reached the Lorelei.”

Chorus:

Hey, Lorelei—no, no, not tonight,

Please stop singing me into the rocks, all right?

Your melody’s killer (like, literally so),

I’m trying to steer straight, not star in your show.

You’re dazzling and divine, like a vintage Riesling wine,

But I’d love to keep my boat intact upon the Rhine.

Hey, Lorelei—have a heart, maybe try,

A lullaby that lets a sailor pass by?

Verse 2:

Tourists on the top deck whisper, “Ooh, she’s trending now,”

She’s got a ring light in the moonlight, flawless filter, just wow

Caption says “Siren Mood,” hashtags “RockLife,” “Brine,”

While my anchor’s doing yoga and my fenders misalign.

The oompah band went quiet, even Karl put down his stein,

My skipper said, “Mein Gott,” and checked our maritime design.

But she winked—and the echo said “Wink!”—a double sonic wham,

Next thing you know we’re parallel-parking next to a ram.

Hey, Lorelei—take a bow, wave goodbye,

How ‘bout humming something safe in A-flat shy?

Verse 3:

She said, “Why so serious? I’m just doing my thing,”

I said, “I respect your art, babe, but could you maybe not sing?”

Or sing, like, really softly? Maybe hum through a scarf?

She laughed, the cliffs laughed back, I laughed (okay, half).

“I’ve got cargo, fragile cargo—souvenirs and bread,

If I wreck this tour again I’ll be permanently dead

She flashed a mischievous grin,

“Relax,” she crooned, “it’s only fun until the sirens win.”

Pre-Chorus:

The current’s whispering sweeter than a chocolate-covered lie,

My crew starts harmonizing, even Heinrich’s getting high—

On harmony, I mean! Keep your eyebrows in line!

We’re drifting like a swan with a grape on the vine—

Hey, Lorelei—I’m a wreck in the making,

beauty is a crime, you’re flagrantly breaking.
