Off the Top

Out from my head and onto the page

I've started saying

"See you later"

More than "goodbye"

Because "goodbye" feels so

Final

"See you later" feels more open-ended

More than that

I want you to know

That I'm expecting

Plotting

To see you again

Climate change happens

Floods a country or two

And you call it

"God's punishment

For homosexuality

And miscegenation"

I want to be a good ancestress

Not so much a LEGACY legacy

But an actual tangible record

Of how much I cared

I want

To measure a part of my life

In how much I cared

"Nothing matters", but some things matter

Those things that matter

Those things that I care about

Somehow

Keep me tethered here

I realize my responsibility

As a land steward

One lesson I've internalized

Is that

I am truly a part of the Earth

From the "fire" that warms my body,

The wind in my lungs,

The rock that makes up my bones

And the water flowing throughout me

I need

To take care of the Earth

Being vegan isn't enough

So I must consider

Indigenous perspectives

The Bottom Billions' perspectives
