Ode to the Pit Man

Down in darkness he earns his keep

Ode to the Pit Man

Beneath the earth where shadows fall,

The pit man stands, both proud and tall.

With hands of grit and heart of steel,

He bears the weight of earth’s cruel heel.

Through coal and dust, he carves his way,

In silence deep where the sun won’t stay.

The roar of machines, the cry of time,

He labors on, in rhythm and rhyme.

His sweat is the earth, his breath the stone,

In caverns dark, he’s never alone.

The pulse of the mine, the rhythm of night,

He walks with courage, out of sight.

Yet in his chest, a fire burns bright,

For the world above, the sky’s pure light.

His hands, they toil for bread and soul,

To build, to feed, to make men whole.

Oh, pit man, silent as the deep,

Your legacy’s in the earth you keep.

Your strength, your toil, your silent cry—

You touch the stars, though you never fly.

This is lovely! A beautiful ode to coal miners. I love the line where his hands are toiling for bread and soul. I think that's so true of so many who work blue collar jobs.
