World Oceans Day: Wonder: Sustaining what sustains us (free verse poem)
Ocean damage is heartbreaking
Ocean action must be taken
Marine species must be protected
~~~
No ocean is for humans to destroy
Yet the most destructive species,
Go on and on with no remorse
~~~
Human activity, threatens the oceans
Deep sea damage, is concerning
Industrial fishing, cash more dollars
~~~
Plastic pollution, it’s outraging
Microscopic life, destroyed and killed
Biodiversity, what does it mean?
~~~
It is variety of life in a world that screams
Screams for help, begs for peace
No animal species, wants to die or disappear

Author’s Notes:
World Oceans Day was celebrated yesterday, 8 of June, 2015, with the opening of the UN Ocean Conference in Nice, France (9 - 13 June, 2025). The theme of this year’s World Oceans Day is ‘Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us.”
“Put simply: the ocean is under enormous threat, but it can revive itself. But, only if together, we act now,” said HRH Prince William, Prince of Wales, Founder of the Earthshot Prize, speaking ahead of the United Nations Ocean Conference which begins in France today.

Effectively captures the devastation of the ocean .
Good luck on the Mickeydreds unofficial challenge. I like that you’ve included your own photos, the picture at the end is so sad to see, I hate seeing trash anywhere but especially on the beach. And your poem shows your fears and concerns, but it’s also informative and the call for action is effectively embedded in your words. I hope we can all soften our hearts and realise that with our everyday efforts, we can make the ocean breathe again. 🤞🏾
Well-wrought, Susan. It's a shame what we've done to the planet.
Powerful & well-written Susan! Thx for bringing more attention to this important topic! 🌸
I don't know if these humans will ever learn. The line about plastic pollution, did you mean outraging/outrageous instead of ouranging?
It's shameful the pollution we do to the Earth
It disgusts me how some people toss their rubbish about without a care in the world. I cannot comprehend how anyone can view selfish acts like these as acceptable, without even batting an eye about the consequences. Thanks for sharing and reminding everyone, Susan!
Lots to think about and thank you for taking part
