No one knows the right way to human
a poem by @philosopherbonnie
The best of your coping mechanisms got you here,
You turned out!
Whatever went awry,
You moved through it -
Found a way,
Even if it wasn’t the healthiest path.
Hurtling through space,
And all of that.
There is no right way of being human -
Despite what the articles
Full of clickbait
Say.
Maybe it feels like every hard thing
There wasn’t spaciousness
To unpack and feel,
Or be fully present to at the time -
All that stuff pushed out of the mind -
Zipped up,
Compressed,
Held in the body,
Under pressure -
Waiting for sufficient bandwidth,
And safety!
To unpack
Unload
Witness,
And move through,
Letting what needs to clear,
Clear -
See what there was to see,
Hear what there was to hear,
Feel what there was to feel,
Grok what there was to grok.
Learn from it,
Adjust the programming accordingly.
This takes having basic needs met -
Foundational needs,
Not “simple” -
We live in a world that makes basic things
Complicated,
Because we don’t understand
Human growth and development,
Or maybe we do,
But it’s not profitable.
But regardless -
It isn’t your fault.
Even if you are wrapped up
In blankets like a burrito,
You are finding a way through it,
Doing the best you can to show up
Given what you know and the circumstances
You have.
You are ok.
And, when there is spaciousness
To unpack all that stuff,
I wish you guides,
And space holders,
And comfort and support,
Because growth is messy,
Humanning is complicated,
And no one knows the right way to do it.
