I love wearing a niqab,
Wearing it to my school and my job.
With my face covered from every man,
World's politicians continue to send down bans.
I'm just a normal girl living an ordinary life,
But, society shows me hatred and stabs my back with a knife.
Don't listen to the media,
It just causes paranoia.
Don't listen to the false rumours, they are lying.
Because of societal hatred, I'm slowly sinking and dying.
I'm just a teenage schoolgirl, no terrorist with a bomb.
I silently cry, shedding endless tears and keeping my calm.
Please, I'm begging, don't make me a victim,
With your hijab banning system.
Don't listen to the media, go check out the Quran!
We, Muslims, are told to be as kind and patient as much as we can.
Those who call themselves 'Muslim' and commit murders,
Are not amongst us since they broke Allah's justice and divine orders.
I think again, I have a Muslim girl's name,
I must wear the niqab bravely and have no shame.
I'm wearing a niqab, my dream, so what?
This is the right decision, I trust my gut.
This is my religion, Islam.
I follow Allah's command and stay patient and calm.
Let's give them a big hand,
To all those Muslim girls who are struggling in this land.

A lovely poem but I have a question: My thoughts are torn on niqab, some things good, some things bad. But what I struggle with is this: I see it as a wall between people. Walls can protect us from harm, this is true, but they also stop us from meeting and getting to know one another. And I believe that the way forward for the world is to become friends, to talk and to understand each other, even if our lives, cultures and beliefs may be radically different. And this is harder when we build walls, be they of stone, concrete, steel or cloth. I always think of the wall between the Israelis and the Palestinians and it makes me feel so sad. Anyway, I'd be interested in your thoughts on this. Keep writing!
