Never Her

A Poem

I can hear your conversation

from another country.

Sipping on black coffee

as your skin grows translucent.

You want to leave.

Though, not her.

Never her.

Why would you

when you can have all that you want

as she remains by your side?

You want to leave.

Walk into another path

of your career.

This is not fulfilling you anymore.

And you believe you deserve more.

So you will leave.

Though, not her.

Never her.

I can hear your conversation

from another country.

Sipping on wine and whiskey

as you fall back into the body

in which you are familiar.

The one you will never leave,

despite placing your hands over another.

You know,

the feeling will not ever leave.

And it is not like me

to replace it with some other man’s.

So it stays.

So it will stay, forever.

Because you will never leave her.

I can hear tears fall onto her cheek.

She is just so happy.

On your knees, you gift her the ring

and return to tell the news.

Every time you leave the country

I fear what I hear will come true.

You will promise your life to her.

And she will promise her life to you.

While your hand in my palm remains

and my love has nowhere to go.

You do not want it.

You do not need it.

So I keep it.

And it will stay, forever.

Even after you leave.

Though, not her.

Never her.
