a poem about Again

We say "never again" until it happens again. We say thoughts and prayers and don't change a thing. We say "Never again," but we don't actually mean it.

If people showed up and actually cared. It would have stopped at Columbine or Sandy Hook. We want reform.

"Never Again."

But each time it happens no one bats an eye. It has become so normalized. Thoughts and prayers are on speed dial for those who could change the laws. They don't. They act as if they can't try to bring about change. They act as if someone else can do the work. Not caring that they are the ones supposed to do the work themselves.

"Never Again"

Teachers and students fear for their lives every day. Every lockdown drill I remember from school. I was afraid, I feared for my life as if it were real. Especially when the school resource officer would pound on the door and beg the teacher to open the door. We'd sit in silence in the corner of the classroom or in a closet. Some kids would joke, but I'd sit and shake like I was in a fight for my life. I wasn't, but it felt so real.

"Never Again."

I am tired of seeing stories coming out every few weeks, every year. Once again, children were harmed in a place where they were supposed to be safe. No one should fear for their lives in a school, movie theater, church, grocery store, and many other places. No one is safe.

"Never Again."

You have to keep an eye out to avoid instances of violence. Children are taught to run, hide, and fight just like employees in stores, movie theatres ,and other public places. No child should have to learn that or learn how to tie a tourniquet at ten years old.

"Never Again."

But once again, it keeps happening over and over. Not just our children but everyone.

"Never Again.

until Again

And again.

over and over and over,

No one is safe.

Change is nowhere to be found.

No person should fear for their life or the lives of their loved ones.

But here we are again.

How many more of these will happen in my lifetime until something is done?

How many more news stories will be like this?

How many more shooters will get infamy, which is what many of them want in the first place?

How many more political battles will be fought, and Gun reform will never be changed?

The Second Amendment is severely outdated, and yet it matters more than the lives of people.

Will my future nieces and nephews learn run, hide, fight or first aid?

Or will they be the generation finally protected?

Never Again, they say.

Never forget, they say.

Thoughts and prayers, they say.

Never Again, they say.

Over and over like a broken record.

I'm tired

The world is tired of seeing us suffer and do nothing about it.

Mental health is the problem.

Yet no help comes.

Guns aren't the problem.

Yet they are.

The more reform, the more we can fix and make right.

No more scared kids or teachers.

No more, never again

No more fame for the ones who committed such acts.

It should have been history a long time ago.

never again, forever ago.

But here we are, the land of the free, home of the brave. fearing for our lives. As if America is a battlefield to be won by those who want destruction and chaos. Each time it happens again, we are reminded that America is not what it should be.

Never Again

Until Again.

Never Again

Until Again.
