Understanding and Overcoming Common Barriers

Communication is key, or so they say

But why does it often seem to go astray?

In relationships, we need to be clear

To listen, to understand, and to be near

But sometimes, it's not so easy to do

There are barriers that can hinder our view

We may not see eye to eye, or hear the same way

And miscommunication can lead us astray

We may have different backgrounds, cultures, or beliefs

Or personal baggage that adds to our grief

We may be triggered by words or actions

And unable to find the right reactions

But communication is a skill we can learn

And with it, our relationships can truly earn

The trust, the love, and the understanding we seek

If we're willing to listen, and not just speak

We need to be mindful of our words and tone

To be open and honest, but not alone

To use "I" statements, and avoid blame

And to seek understanding, not just fame

We need to listen actively, and not just hear

To be present and patient, and show we care

To ask questions, and seek clarification

And not assume, or jump to conclusions without hesitation

Navigating communication in relationships is an ongoing task

But if we're willing to learn, and take it to heart

Our relationships can grow, and deepen with time

And we can find peace, love, and joy, and leave the barriers behind.
