National One Cent Day - April 1st

April 1 for Showers And Fools - A Mikeydred April Dollar Prompt (pennies may leave America)

By Andrea Corwin Published 10 months ago Updated 10 months ago 1 min read

Your hair was flowing in the wind

For countless years on end,

Lady Liberty was your name

Made of copper and later mixed with zinc

The reverse side might have wreaths, eagles, or Indian heads

The Mint wiped out your head of curly locks, and

To honor a President, tried and true changed to

Good ol’ Abe, with his strong chin and beard

Honest Abe resides on the penny with the reverse showing

Various pictorials of Abe’s life, begun in Kentucky

traversing Illinois and east to the Capitol

>> From Lady Liberty to the man who freed the slaves >>

Who better than Abe to showcase National One Cent Day?

Note: President Trump in February 2025 announced he wanted the U.S. Mint to stop producing pennies. R.I.P. Penny, you have had a long and illustrious life from your birth in 1793. I had no idea April 1 is National One Cent Day before Mike put up his April challenge and I searched for events in April.

That's cool that you shared the history of pennies with us. I'm worried that when it's gone the dollar will be 4 cents less. Oddly, the nickel cost 12 cents to make, but it's not on the chopping block. Maybe you're right about him wanting to bury liberty, women, and abolition.

A penny saved is a penny earned? Ben Franklin? Pennies are an American tradition and you gave a proper homage to them! Most paper money and coins are now a thing of the past since we have the plastic cards. I had to write a check the other day because I had misplaced my ATM card. I almost forgot how.

  • Thankyou for sharing your history 🙏

From renaming the Gulf of Mexico to no more pennies what will he do next. By the way I just remembered that wasn't pennies to be done away with because not that they were worthless, but for some other societal reason. Good job.

Wonderful tribute to a 232 staple in our lives. Swamp thing is killing a lot of history.

Great historical verse and factual info, Andi! I used to be finding pennies in the street and picking them all the time. But now that they are going to be a scarcity and collector's items I guess no one is throwing them around anymore.
