My Wedding Day
I was in too deep

Made the decision
Took the big step,
Hoped to have a marriage
With wonderful memories to be kept.
***
The big day come
Down poured the rain,
The marriage certificate given
Just waiting to be framed.
***
The wedding reception started
Went off without a hitch,
Then by the end of the night
My new husband was pissed.
***
Upstairs we were taken
To the honeymoon suite,
Finally our first night together
Where true love would finally meet.
***
But to my dismay
This was not to be,
My husband in a drunken stupor
Did nothing but shout at me.
***
I sat quietly taking his abuse
Until finally he fell asleep,
If this is what married life has to offer
I knew I’d gotten in too deep.

About the Creator
Colleen Millsteed
My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
