My Type

An Ekphrastic Abecedarian

By D. J. ReddallPublished about a year ago 1 min read
Edvard Munch, "The Vampire," 1895

At a glowing glance, I recognized you

Beauty is mine, ageless and abiding

Countries have been slain for a taste of me

Down history’s spiral stair have I walked

Every eye has its own, tidal pull

Fighting the power of mine is folly

Grinning at me like a dog, I saw you

Hesitant, but already hypnotized

Into my orbit you stumbled, guileless

Jesting clumsily with your hungry stare

Knowing you at once, I feigned shy surprise

Looking at you, I knew how you would taste

Many are those like you who have fed me

Not one regretted my sharp, starving kiss

Over to me did you stumble, so young

Playing your part in a hunt old as blood

Queens have envied my sanguine, subtle style

Red is each sip, from slaves or senators

Stolen vitality is strangely sweet

To my gallery of ghosts, you’ll belong

Under my skin, you will surge and ripple

Visit my dreams you might, silent or mad

Whisper you will after I have claimed you

Xenophon tells me a joke, now and then

You were mine as soon as you looked at me

Zoroaster taught me to write poems

Fan-fucking-tastic! I really love the G and R lines, they really highlight how the vampire sees all as beneath them, but this whole acrostic was excellent!

Oh my. This is absolutely genius. It doesn't even flow like an abecedarian. Love love love it, sir. Love the imagery and your words fit it so perfectly. Aesome job!

  • You blew my mind with this! My favourite line was the one starting with Y!
