My Narcotic Charms

You will be back (as I foretold)

So you have done a bit of experimenting and toked on some grass

Tried the good old acid, some cocaine and even some hashish,

Now you’ve grown tired of all that and looking for more of a bend

A mate comes along and says, “I’ll introduce you to my friend Heroin”.

***

Well little man, think very hard before you come to play with me

It may not be your wisest choice, so let me tell you how it will be,

I promise it won’t take me long to seduce you into being my slave

Don’t laugh honey, I’ve sent men stronger than you to their grave.

***

I can see you are convinced, you would never become a disgrace

Never be weak enough to get addicted to my poppy seed waste,

With these beliefs you’ll start experimenting with me one afternoon

And find yourself sleeping and dreaming in my arms quite soon.

***

Before you know it, I’ll be comfortably swimming deep in your veins

Then when you do wake, my cravings will nearly drive you insane,

But it is not too severe as you’ve only been cruising my way

You can still be the responsible adult and stay clean for a day.

***

Gradually there’s less time in between bouts of sanity and strength

Sweetheart, I’m all you can think about and you’ll go to great length,

You still firmly believe that you are in control and we are just a fling

We’ll walk the walk together and even hit the dance floor for a swing.

***

Feeling indestructible and believing there is nothing you can’t do

You’ll discover pleasant dreams and blissful sleep in my arms too,

Now I’ve dug my hooks in deep and I’m confident of my stronghold,

You’ll soon realise the costs you’ll pay, as I’m worth more than gold.

***

You’ll lie and cheat to all those you love, as they question your conduct

Realising too late that you’ve turned into something vial and corrupt,

Turning to mugging, cheating and stealing for my narcotic charms

And before you know it, you’re back and contently lying in my arms.

***

On waking you’ll realise, the monster flooding your veins has grown

Disgusted by your weakness so you’ll promise to leave me alone,

But if you think I’m that easy to remove, as you try to backtrack

Then sweetie you’ll discover, just how hard I am to get off your back.

***

First the horror of vomiting, cramps and your stomach tied in a knot

Your nerves agitated, pleading and screaming for just one more shot,

Next the cold sweats, the hot chills, the incredible withdrawal pains

Babe, a simple solution you can be saved by my little white grains.

***

Well hello there and welcome on back (exactly as I once foretold)

A done deal with the devil and ready to give me your body and soul,

You’ll offer all, your conscience, your morals and your loving heart

We will be forever wedded and together until death do us part.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
