My Dearest Scion Hampton,

Life has evolved to dust since we met

to celebrate my sixtieth plateau.

You laughed with jest and a dinner date set.

If I had known, it’d be forever …

then I would have clung to you as a treasure,

never to let go.

*

Night lights, a million candles exert…

and staged your gridiron show.

Your sweat, earth scents stained my shirt.

If I had known, it’d be forever…

Then I would have clung to you as a treasure,

never to let go.

*

Amber mountain skies, your arm on my shoulder.

To debate the mysteries of the world.

Life, women, and wonders.

If I had known, it’d be forever…

Then I would have clung to you as a treasure,

Never to let go.

*

The Yellow bus rolled by our home sublime.

Kidnapped you to school.

Your fingers slipped mine.

If I had known, it’d be forever...

Then I would have clung to you as a treasure.

Never to let go.

*

Your googoo eyes, sweet cooing charms,

you stole my heart, and I glowed.

A newborn, shielded in my arms.

If I had known, it’d be forever...

then I would have clung to you as a treasure.

Never to let go.

*

Green to ashes, dust to death.

I hold our memories close.

Though heaven seems far, it’s but a breath.

Wait for me,

and you will see

this veil is not forever.

We’ll embrace

and count our treasures.

Never to let go.

Sincerely,

Your Dad

Till we meet again, son.

Unconditional love within an inconceivable loss, your tribute to your son vows the everlasting emotion of love - written so beautifully, and I agree ‘Though heaven seems far, it’s but a breath’ - I am so sorry for your pain, I do believe in my heart you will see him again. ❤️

This was truly beautiful, Scott. The way the stanzas move backwards in time and the last three lines repeat. It just added so much each time I read them. Thank you for sharing this poem with us. ❤️

  • Your subtitle had my tears flowing. And it flowed throughout your poem. Your photo at the end hit me hard. I've read many pieces of yours about Hampton but this one made me extra emotional. Your poem was beautiful!

A beautiful tribute, and a powerful reminder that nothing is forever… not our time with people, and not our time apart either. “This veil is not forever” is my favorite line.
