Music To My Ears

Catharsis Chronicles February Competition

You were ripped from this world and torn from my heart,

Leaving behind a cold void of devastation,

A gaping hole that nobody can ever fill,

Tearing my world apart,

When I always believed you were my forever!

**

As I packed away your belongings, I found a little piece of us,

A CD that actually belonged to me,

One you quietly stole, and kept as your own —

While I always pondered the destination of that disc, not knowing whence I lost it.

**

But life goes on,

And there are times you disappear from my daily thoughts,

(Although never from my heart),

Until…….I hear those words, that forever remind me of you.

**

‘He’s going to step on you again’,

Preferably at full volume,

But, it must be sung by The Party Boys,

To do our memories justice.

**

As the bass pounds, the guitar riffs,

And those words echo throughout the room,

A smile lights upon my face and you’re back in my world,

Just a music beat, a foot tap, a rock scream away.

**

You, a Pavarotti fan of an age-old generation,

Mouthing the words to our rock song,

And for a second, in the space and time continuum,

My heart stops bleeding as our memories live on.

**

I ‘stole’ back that disc; the case scratched and battered,

And as I touch it, it’s like holding your hand once again,

As I sit and listen, it’s like your warm arms cradle me back into the land of living,

Until my feet tap out our rhythm, my heart beats our tune, and I hear you call my name.

**

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

  • This was so wistful and beautifully written. Loved it!

  • For us it's Gaga. He was one of her "little monsters". Remarkable what a song can do to/for us.
