Mother Wolf

For the Capitoline Wolf

By Stephanie HoogstadPublished 4 months ago 1 min read
Capitoline Wolf, Artist Unknown (Wolf) and Antonio del Pollaiuolo (Remus and Romulus), from Wikipedia: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capitoline_Wolf

Oh mighty wolf, to man you’ve lost your pups

Kidnapped during one of their senseless hunts

And all you can do is keep your head up

And charge your way toward the battlefront

* * *

A sticky, bloody trail left in your wake

No man left standing as they cross your path

Thunder claps, and the earth itself does quake

From the power of your motherly wrath

* * *

Then the sound of twin cries perks up your ears

A pair of babes no one wanted to keep

The two infants stare at you with no fears

And into your heart love suddenly seeps

* * *

They share your warmth and suckle at your teats

Washing off the sins of their father’s feats

* * *

    Great work!!! I vaguely remember seeing this statue depicted somewhere. This was a unique topic for the prompt. Best of luck!

    Oh my gosh. I love this poetic take on the myth. The cadence and imagery works so well.
