The Face of Sorrow

Mona Lisa,

What sorrow lies behind your face?

What have you seen

That made you fall away from grace?

- - -

Oh, your faint smile

Reflects a joy that has gone cold

It speaks of death

That reigns and breathes within your soul

- - -

Even the land

Shrouded in darkness behind you

Sheds greater light,

Even when the sun hides from view

- - -

Your dark brown eyes,

When have they danced in the spring light?

Did the black veil

Devastate any sign of life?

- - -

Mona Lisa,

Only you and your maker know

Of the fierce pain

That eats your joy past tomorrow

- - -

I don’t know you

And yet it feels as if I do

I’ve seen that look

On many other faces too
