Oh Morning Star

Shed your light upon the darkness of humanity

As you plunge to the recesses of the Earth

* * *

Oh Light Bringer

Bring us the knowledge of Thy Father

Sneak to us that heavenly fruit

So we may be free of the confines of The Garden

* * *

Dear Fallen Angel

Test us, tempt us, for that is Thy Father’s will

His reason for unleashing you upon the Earth

Not to ruin—but to strengthen

Through trials and triumphs

For you are the great

The First Born

The Adversary

Author’s Note: I know that I’m not winning any points with my Christian readers for this poem, but I was so struck by the image of this statue that I had to write it. The statue is Fuente del Ángel Caído, or Fountain of the Fallen Angel, in Madrid, Spain. It was itself inspired by John Milton’s Paradise Lost. You can learn more about it on Wikipedia.

    I am sure your Christian readers don't mind it too much. If I take it apart slightly. From it's attachment. I could see that it's a creative way of writing a prayer. Commenting on the world we live in now. Understanding where the ruin of our world is coming from. Using imagery and symbols to guide us there. But ending on an unexpected last line. It's smart, it has it's merits. Fantastic work Stephanie, for that I will give you a hug instead of condemning you. I would love to read more of your work when I circle back around, at some point. Saw you on the top story list. I might go to that next 🤗❤️

    I felt like this was an amazing perspective! I grew up Christian, but have been finding my own path, and this makes you think for sure

    First, not in least bit offended! thought your poem was stirring and while I may not entirely agree, it gave me pause for thought and your word choices gave it an elevated feel! that is a striking image to take inspiration from! well wrought, Stephanie!
