Lost in Love’s Devotion
A Heartfelt Ghazal by Kalim Kashani

Kalim Kashani, a 17th-century Persian poet of the Indian style, is known for his intricate metaphors and deep emotional expressions. His poetry often explores themes of love, longing, and the inevitable sorrow that accompanies devotion. In this ghazal, the poet surrenders entirely to love, emphasizing that his heart has never sought anything beyond the beloved. Through striking imagery—like the candle burning itself out in silence—he beautifully portrays the pain of unreciprocated affection and the hopelessness of waiting for a distant love.
🌿 Beyond your love, I held no thought or care,
No heart has ever wandered so unaware.
Like a candle, I burned and fell without a sigh,
No chest has ever held such smoke drifting high.
I wished to send a kiss to greet your face,
Yet your tresses whispered: "There is no space."
O fate, why did you not welcome my union’s day?
For us, such joy was never meant to stay.
