Listening to Understand
"The biggest communication problem is we do not listen to understand, we listen to reply.” - Stephen Covey.
We don't talk about, race relations
uncomfortable faces,
the spanner in the works,
Supremacy
spanning across nations.
We don't talk about, misogyny
inequality in creation,
so much hate and…
wait
Look me in the eye,
I'm tryna have a conversation…
We don't talk about Politics,
That's off the dinner table,
the discussion subsides,
which then divides us,
Everyone so concerned with optics.
Okay you see it
you read it
it saturates our headlines
throwaway comments,
when topics are topical
and it's not your lifeline.
Okay you hear it
Yeah you hear it
but that's not the same as listening.
And talking.
And reflecting
From this conversation,
you're missing,
Instead,
you're deflecting,
defecting.
Just who are you 'protecting?'
you won your battle
but lost our war
and now, you're forgetting
that
They came for her, they came for him,
they came for them,
now who?
See, you're nodding your head
to what I've said,
but what, actually, will you do?
See we don't talk about connection,
I'm here, take my hand.
misfires in all directions,
all across our lands.
You mistook my pain for 'aggression'.
and make your move still as planned.
We're all just hearing to reply
but no one's listening to understand.
