like roses from seeds

a poem of loss and gain

By angela hepworthPublished 2 years ago 1 min read

friend, the years come and they go

and on the phantom breeze i just faintly smell

roses and weeds, you smelled like your garden

like dirt and like leaves, the sweet scent

of flowers trailed behind you wherever you went

the beauty you lent to the world, i remember

i knew you, i knew all of your creeds

i knew all of your wants, your desires, your needs

i knew your love for nature, a world of kind deeds

was the world that you wanted

your flower buds and seeds

they were planted and ready to grow

but you were ready to go, so you went

and they died

and when you died i cried

and those plants in your garden rotted and shriveled

like this heart of mine, like the soul you had crushed

like these people you left, you were just one of us

and you lacked so much trust in all others

why was that?

did you die because it was best for you?

did you die so you could rest?

did you die with a weight on your chest?

an unspoken finger pressed against your lips

something silent and locked deep away

in a place i could never access?

if i asked you to stay

would you have called me selfish?

i couldn’t help if i loved and hated you

for letting me go, for letting life end

but now i know i was wrong, my true friend

and your suffering never was seen by me truly

your pain, it was real, and i let it consume me

instead of celebrating you and your life

in my strife, i was cruel and so wrong for

making your life and death about me, for you see

i now wish to become who you wanted to be

so your garden will always bloom in memory

and on earth, and your love, it will blossom from me

it will burn, it will grow here so beautifully

like sun’s light on this earth, like algae in the sea

like the powers that be

like your roses from seeds
