I am no man’s dream

or aspiration.

I am the fantasy they run to

escape the life they chose.

For a night,

they are unhinged and free as me.

Wild like me. A beast like me.

I am shameful secrets and hats that had to be hung,

Reminders of glory days,

golden youth;

There are no suits or timecards here

in my lair.

Just red furs and midnight sheets

that hide us from what we should be.

We are fulfilled, revived,

then they return to their lives.

Discard me.

I bear no children,

yet I give so much life.
