Leaving Signatures in the Sand
A poem and a song

Our bodies leave imprints in the sand,
still warm from the sun,
as a remembrance to the sea,
that this is where we lay that day,
until the waves wash -
these signatures away.
Somewhere dancing upon the waves,
magical mermaids from underwater kingdoms,
will receive our signatures,
like greetings
and will place them in seashells—
so others can hear our voices.
It’s truly funny to imagine.
that our signatures can travel,
perhaps to foreign shores,
upon the waves that took them
and weave them with others—
that they find along the way.
Like a special remembrance,
that we were once a part of life’s scheme,
we were here to love, to live, and to dream.
leaving behind sparkling memories -
as we pass our signatures along.
Beneath the shimmering sun,
as the sea sparkles,
along the shore,
our footprints will wash away—
just like our signatures in the sand.
Only the mermaids,
that sit upon rocks in the sun,
know the secrets that the sea holds,
know the sounds of many different voices,
that leave their signatures—
embedded in the sand.
