Lead me to the land of the long white cloud
The home of eternal voyagers

Crux, the sky canoe.
Anchor our place on the map,
I know I am home.

Author's notes:
Aotearoa is the official name of New Zealand in Māori, the native language. In English it translates to mean 'The land of the long, white cloud.'
Crux is the name of a constellation of stars in the Southern Hemisphere, more commonly referred to as 'The Southern Cross.' It was used by early navigators as it can always be used to find south. It is depicted on the national flags of multiple countries including New Zealand, Australia, Samoa, Papua New Guinea and Brazil.
For many in Māori mythology, the Crux constellation is seen as the anchor of a great sky waka (in English: canoe).

Very beautiful writing
I love this, because not only is it beautiful, it is also educational.
I like this poem, impressive that with so few syllables you’re able to convey a sense of comfort and belonging. I’m glad you included an authors note. I think good poetry can stand on its own, but insight into specific context and author intent really make for a richer experience on a second read.
This is lovely Joe.
Love the context you shared for this! Beautiful and striking haiku, Joe!
This is beautiful and I really loved your Author’s Note. I feel like Māori is a very poetic language, I mean, the land of the long white cloud? Thats astonishing.
This is wonderful. Love it!
