King Tide

A Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished about a year ago 1 min read

Calm down! We have seen all of this before

Normal stretches to fit all kinds of strange;

Water tells stories we learn to ignore

The muddy edge coaxes you into range

How buoyant are earnest apologies?

Sure, it's temporary, but it will hold

Save these soporific tautologies

"It is what it is" might float; man, it's cold!

Watch all of your spires and temples sink

The tide doesn't care about your new phone

What washes you can choke you in a blink

Even the emperor will drown alone

Go ahead! Test the patience of the sea

When the bridges are gone, where will we be?

Sonnet

“What washes you can choke you in a blink” a very cautionary line! Well wrought!

I do love the ocean...from or near the shore. Wonderful piece.

  • Why did I find this mildly threatening? Hahahaha. Loved your poem!

What a powerful piece! The imagery of the sea, its indifference, and the inevitability of change hits hard. Love the final lines, they hit with a stark punch of truth!
