my heart of gold
I painted black
a chill of cold
ran up my back
a sense that nothing
would be the same
emotions flooding
I asked her name
karma, she said
wearing a grin
her eyes were dead
with thickened skin
I knew she'd seen
my kind before
we were like kin
declaring war
I hesitated, before I asked
what's this pay-back gonna cost me
clearly, she said, this sort of task
is free, it was paid, previously
for every time he broke your heart
every half truth that you heard
it's all covered dear, every part
in the moment it occurred
my calloused heart began to melt
for the first time, I was unguarded
she whispered, I know how you felt
I was created by the brokenhearted
before she left, she reached for me
with something in her fingertips
a business card, a guarantee
his name would never cross my lips
and if it did, only in jest
knowing he'd finally paid the price
to my friends, I quietly confess
that'll teach him next time, to be nice
