This is for Mikeydred’s January Prompt

The start of the year is the time to ponder - Michelle Liew

January may not come across as interesting as other months. It has a more reflective nature. What are the other months like? What would happen to them if there was no January?

Some points to ponder with this free verse poem!

**********************************************************************

January strolls by the snow-glazed pond,

his footsteps a soft tread on the brittle frost

With each step he ponders

Each breath a whisper that fades too soon

The months arrive, drawn by his muse

Curious as to his solemn thoughts.

******************************************************************

July sits under a sun-soaked pine,

Her warmth defying the frosty air.

“Why so cold brother? Why the silence?”

January turns to her and says,

“My silence tells what you will bring.”

******************************************************************

October, dressed in red-brown shoes,

Dances past in a swirl of wind.

“Your canvas is too plain, January.

Do paint some colour, lively hues.”

January smiles, white as clouds,

“I need no fire to conjure you.”

******************************************************************

June meanders through white forest,

Her laughter a tune too lively for the season.

“You’re too dull, dear brother, while I ascend!”

“Yet,” January answers, “Without my monotony,

You’re music won’t begin.”

******************************************************************

December stays at the pond’s edge,

His visage uncertain in the ice.

“Do you dread the past?” He asks anxiously

His voice a fading scale.

“I do not shun,” January assures,

“ I carry you forth, your live roots covered in snow.”

******************************************************************

The months drift by, one by one,

Leaving January alone under the wintry sky,

His footprints the only proof of his presence.

He brushes his hand over the snow,

And gently nudges the sleeping soil,

Whispering,

“Soon.”

I love this. Especially those last lines. I lingered on “I carry you forth, your live roots covered in snow.”

What a lovely take on January chatting with the other months! Each month brings its personality, but January's calm wisdom ties it all together beautifully. That "Soon" at the end? Perfectly cozy and hopeful. Love it! 💕
