Is This Uncertainty A Sign?

A midwinter (as in, approximate literal middle of winter) poem.

Two winters ago

Lost myself on a journey to the winter show

As the winds glazed through the ice on the ground

I couldn’t keep going: not with what I had found.

But there was one thing that kept me afloat

Then: the certainty of what I had known

I knew what it was, that was for sure

So trying ways to move on, I could

Now two winters later, lost, I am;

Discovering the downfall of a deep end

Once perceived as an avenue for art

But now’s more known for various scars

They say it’s heartless, reckless and cruel;

Jealous, insane; obnoxiously jeweled.

Far from the path that they once knew

Or their perceptions of sunlit views.

However, it’s hard for me to believe

The newer reviews of the place they conceived

When it’s so far from what I’d first known

And far from the dreams that I set in stone.

Parts of it: they have to be right.

Things wouldn’t end up like this, otherwise.

I’ve seen quite a lot: there’s at least some grain

Of truth to the grave they desire to make.

So if you’re out there; would you mind telling me

‘Bout the trails I used to take for granted and free?

If not, then this must be a sign

That I should leave my remains behind.
