Is This Love?

Understanding Hope

By Katherine ShannonPublished 5 years ago 1 min read

She sits

She sits alone

Heart broken, battered, and bruised

She hurts

Is this what love feels like?

Her eyes are swollen and red

Tears stain her cheeks

Her chest feels tight

She hyperventilates

The walls are closing in

Is this what love feels like?

Her eyes feel heavy

Her heart beats faster

Pills scattered across the floor

Veins are open

The empty bottle of liquor hits the floor

Is this what love feels like?

She sits

Her heart starts to slow

The door to her room opens wide

Her father shouts her name

She does not respond

Her mother cries in fear

Is this what love feels like?

Fear

Fear is such a funny thing

We fear the unknown

Where is she?

She isn’t dead

The doctor forces a tube down her throat

She vomits

The pills and liquor are forced out

The room is spinning

Faces are blurry

Is this what love feels like?

She lays

She lays in that stiff hospital bed

Her wrists have been stitched closed

The white bandages that wrap her wrists itch

Is this what love feels like?

Love

Love is pain

Love is heartache

Love is fake

Love is a lie

That is what she used to think

The sun shines through the window

Her parents stand watching over her

Their faces are filled with relief and sadness

They say its time to go home

Is this what love feels like?

Relief

Relief is such a funny thing

You no longer feel that pain

The pain, strain, and stress of a broken heart

Is this what love feels like?

She stands in her bedroom

The room feels softer now

The sun shines through her cream colored curtains

She smiles

She realizes that she is free

Free from pain, sadness, and heartache

She is whole again

She is happy

She can smile again

She can laugh again

Is this what love feels like?

Love

Love is hope

Love is honest

Love is real

Love is true

Love is fleeting

This is what love feels like.
