Invisible cities
a short tribute to one of my favourite books of all time
By Roderick MakimPublished 2 years ago • 1 min read

Kublai and Marco in a
Rubbish heap.
__
Riches found in
Conversation and imagination
Rusted flotsam
Ruined jetsam
Imagining whole worlds
In a thousand cities
Breathed out of asbestos and
Microplastics and
Cheap wine
As they stroll together
Between
Golden silver fountains
Battlefields of blood
Marketplaces of pepper and
__
Who is to say
What world truly
Exists
Outside the
Ever-swirling smoke
Rising from their
Ever-lit pipes,
Out there
Beyond their lowered
Eyelids?

I've not read this book but you wrote such a wonderful tribute for it!
Italo Calvino's works have been on my to-read list for a while. Hope they'll wait for me a bit longer.
Wow. Gorgeous poem. To see beauty beyond the rubbish heaps in the world, that is a skill and a pleasure. In writing, it must be magical, poetic and deep. I must find a copy!
