IF DEATH WAS A WHALES SONG

I watched as a wilderness twisted it’s way through your limbs

and could not remember the last time that I had seen the sun.

I switched on the light, and dabbed your lips

with a water soaked sponge and counted

each and every one of your last breaths

wondering if this, if this is the last one.

And then, you winked at me;

and all I could think of was the worlds most loneliest whale

in the midst of the ocean, who’s song falls slightly out of tune,

so that no one ever responds.
