I Wake Up, Feeling Grateful

A English-Spanish bilingual poem

I wake up with the canciones

of pinzones and gorriones,

on a new fresca mañana.

I walk up to the ventana,

lift the cortina,

and look to the oeste.

The colina greets me,

these days decked in

amarillo mostaza.

Golondrinas flying above,

in the azul cielo.

Primavera’s suave sol

bathing the valle.

And I feel immense

gratitud for this vida.

Translation:

I wake up with the songs of finches and sparrows on a fresh new morning. I walk up to the window, lift the curtain, and look toward the west. The hill greets me, these days covered in mustard yellow. Swallows fly above, across the blue sky. The gentle spring sun bathes the valley. And I feel immense gratitude for this life.
