I Should Have Been ...

A poetic lament

I should have been an actor,

thespian treader of the boards.

Resplendent audience distractor

with my bard-like vocal cords.

*

I should have been a sailor

Ride seahorses. Leave my wake.

But they call me ‘Simple Simon,’

sadly not Sir Francis Drake.

*

I should have been a cyclist,

racing in the peloton.

Climbing alpine peaks in lycra,

sprinting for Olympic Gold.

*

I should have been a racing driver,

screeching around tight hairpin bends.

‘Max Verstappen! Eat my rubber!’

I would scream in slipstreamed air.

*

I should have been a writer

Well, perhaps that dream’s not gone.

Or is this just the final chapter…

My final dream. My swan song.

Lovely, poignant reflections; a writer/poet you are, and a darn good one! :)

Beautifully done, you might have been a lot of things, but you're a wonderful poet.
