I met my ghost today.

She stood still, unmoving before me,

Staring with blank, haunting eyes,

Glazed and gazing right through me

As if I were the spirit,

I the intangible thing

Which walks right through walls of life,

Never touching anything.

.

She then gave a serpentile smile,

With lucid lips untrembling,

Sending chills down my spine

As she smiled at my shivering.

The cold she caused possessed me,

The freezing air paralyzed time,

Leaving me ‘lone with my phantom,

Rest of world immobilized.

.

Steadily, she glided forward.

Her eyes showed resent unrestrained.

Her hair a floating, tangled mess,

Skin thin, cheekbones hollow, flesh faint.

She came to a stop before me,

I felt her breath as my own,

So close that if I’d stepped forward,

Her spirit would fin’lly be home.

.

But she didn’t reclaim her old body,

She didn’t whisper in my ear,

Her message wholly unexpected,

For it came in the shape of a tear.

Against her pale, translucent face,

It shone like a star in the night,

And I knew my fading apparition

Would never possess my might.
