Good Evening, Moon
I know that you’re watching.
Sometimes the barest sliver,
On nights made for secrets and dark deeds
Sometimes full and round
Brightening the night for travellers and revels
Sometimes in between,
Waxing and waning
Throughout all the seasons
Warm summer nights, crisp autumn ones,
Contrary spring and cold winter,
You are always there, watching
What have you witnessed, alone in the sky?
Stars glimmering too distant to know or care of what happens here.
But you know.
You watch, silent in your majesty
Inspiring poets, illuminating the night
Artemis the Huntress, the Man in the Moon,
Our ancient ancestors thought you prey,
Believed the stars were hunters’ campfires
Even as your light let them see predators.
Through millions of years, you’ve been watching
Silent witness to our history
And for unknown eons more, you will witness our future.
What am I, to that time?
Lunar Guardian, mother moon,
Thank you for your witness.
