You are the flame explorers use searching a black night cave.
You are the canary miners rely on to save their life.
You are the discovery that the Earth is round.
You are the music that never fails to run a child’s monster-fear out of a closet.
but..
The wind can blow out your fire in one swift breeze.
That’s where you’ll find me.
I’m the match, stone against stone, stick grinding another stick.
Reminding you,
You have the power to ruin the beauty and life of a forest with the catch of one twig.
You have the strength to hurt the ones who have done you wrong with one lick of your tongue.
You have the beauty to create laughter, memories, and comfort in your gentle light.
I’m the crack of the logs melting under you.
Whispering, reminding you,
Knowing your capabilities is knowledge, controlling them for the right moment is important wisdom.
A canary always falls in its cage.
A silent siren of warning.
You never cry for help.
I am the oxygen breathed back into your lungs.
The fight keeping you from one of death’s victories.
Reminding you,
Just because it seems like the end doesn't mean it is.
The first chapter has to end so the second one can be written.
Remember you have to end the chapter.
Also you survive to the end of the book.
Discovery is rounded by astonishment, awe, and answers to questions.
I found that you labeled me doubt.
Not that I’m mad.
I run back to the front of your mind with a question,
You race your fingers against a keyboard,
Searching for facts to prove me wrong.
Asking for you to research and learn and teach me.
I ask you to doubt that your politicians say they can fix America.
I ask you to doubt when your best friend said that the girl in your English class is a slut.
I beg you to doubt.
Reminding you,
To learn, listen, and think for yourself.
Because they were wrong about you.
You aren’t the discovery that the Earth is round
You are the discovery that the sky reflects off of the ocean.
They are both beautiful on their own but compliment each other in the best ways.
Your melody is overpowering but,
Monsters come back,
New ones are created.
Fear creeps his way back in the undertone of your melody.
I match with harmony.
Pick at fear until he leaves our beautiful song alone.
I sing and change one note.
One phrase.
Reminding you,
With me, big sister, you are safe.
With me, big sister, you are safe.
You are safe.
They were wrong about you.
Thought they could write you in the margins of their notebooks in history.
Like a play, you’d act along following their marked margins.
They were terrified when you slid your way down the metal spiral spine.
Creating havoc and writing history on your own.
They were infuriated when you discovered your voice and cemented your own path.
Making a hypotenuse in a perfect square forest.
Making it the new road most traveled with new possibilities.
They were wrong about you.
You took the sheet music and wrote your own song in bright pink sharpie.
Singing notes of your own, spreading love and kindness everywhere your song was played.
And just like the fire, you burned the margin writers in the forest.
You sat with doubt over several cups of coffee and discovered yourself.
You sang away the monsters and fear with notes of pink sharpie.
You made them fall in love with you.
Everyone you interacted with.
All gained their own amusing obsession with you.
And my darling, I got lucky.
I got to watch you make it through the second chapter.
I got to stand by you when you survived to the end of the book.
I witnessed you gorgeously happy, upset, and frustrated.
I got to love you 6,205 days.
I got lucky to love you.
I got lucky to know you.
I got lucky to write about you.
I got lucky to call you my sister,
share the same blood.
My sweet sweet big sister,
I got lucky enough to exist at the very same moment with you.
I got lucky.
And there is no other thing I could get this lucky with.
