The Art of Being Human

Never too early to learn kindness

The boy is three and a half,

but he has not been told

it’s not too early

to embrace the virtue

called empathy and kindness.

He has been shown

by leading example,

as we go delivering

garden herbs to neighbors.

We fill birdbath

with fresh water.

I tell him the garden arugula

are for the finches.

That day in the park,

I saw him

handing a fallen car

to a child on the slide.

He pushed, chivalrously,

as a little girl sat on the swing.

I was smiling proudly

As he came, I hugged him

and let him know.

Mommy is pleased,

as her little boy

is learning

the art of being human.

He's learning. I tell them both, we are immigrant and you have few relatives. Got to earn relations by good behavior.
