I DIDN’T LOSE A SON

I gained a family

()()()()()()()()()

Once upon a time,

On a warm August day,

Into this world

A child made his way.

**

I cheered when he walked,

But as motherhood goes,

I cried as the toddler

Bumped his first toe.

**

When he fell out of bed,

I knew through my tears,

There would be cuts and more bruises

Through his childhood years.

**

I tried thinking of ways

To protect this small boy.

After all, he’s my child –

My pride and my joy.

**

Then before I could think

Of the things to be done,

We were walking to school

For his first day of Grade One!

**

I remember his first “job”:

A newspaper route.

He never complained.

Just gave papers out.

**

It was six in the morning

When his feet hit the floor.

He’d pick up his sack

And head for the door.

**

Once done, off to school

Where he’d spend most of the day.

When he returned home,

He’d go out and play.

**

With sports of all kinds,

He’d run fast and far.

Too soon he grew up

And was driving a car.

**

Then one magical night,

A girl entered his life.

No one ever doubted

That she’d be his wife.

**

They created their own world

Of sunshine and bliss,

And soon sealed their vows

With a wedding day kiss.

**

Then, one year later

On a warm summer day,

A beautiful baby

Was coming their way.

**

With eyes big and wide,

She came into this world.

And beautiful Stephanie

Became their little girl.
