you see, i googled

home

because i have never

been entirely sure just

what that entails. a

quaint house with a white

picket fence, perhaps. or

a cozy fireside sofa, home

to a family of four and

two dogs. maybe it’s the

coffee shop on the corner you

frequent so often they

know your name and

order by heart, wide smiles

and cheerful greetings as you

approach the counter. for some, it’s

a field of green. scoring the

winning goal for their team, a

rush of adrenaline and

pure joyous energy.

sometimes, when the door to a

home

opens, the person who

steps through it sucks all

the warmth out and leaves you

with a chill down your spine and

a hole in your heart. it is a

place where they do not

shower you

in hugs and kisses, rather

you shower

alone in the dark, knees to the

floor, hands raised, hoping so

hard for a way out. some

homes

must be evacuated. there is only

one thing

that can encompass every feeling

home

can make you feel.

safe and welcomed, nervous at

times because there is so much

to lose that you tiptoe across

the glass that makes up this

home.

joy that makes

your heart beat so hard and

loud that you could swear you’re dying but

you’d greet it with arms open

wide anyway.

you are my white picket

fence, my safe space. my warm,

welcoming atmosphere. you know

every part of me by heart. i

run to your open arms and

as you wrap me in wonder my

heart beats happiness only for you.

you are my home.
