Walking up the hall, I see everyone wanting to go home
I sigh knowing I will get to go
However I’ll be taking them all home with me
From the man I helped pump his heart, who’s grand daughter won’t get to say good bye
To the mother who died two doors down from her daughter
From the husband who thought it was just allergies saying goodbye on a screen
****
I cry with every passing day
Every passing year
Knowing that while I get to go home
Many will not
And I start to feel guilty all the same
Authors Note
I worked in the COVID ICU doing the pandemic, and it broke me. These were words I wrote during that time.
