Hidden Potential

Had this always been here? Hiding in the darker shadows of my mind?

Lost in the thoughts of what ifs and could have beens,

Dancing in a timeless fashion to dreams I had of tomorrow,

And wondering how the two had collided in such a way,

That I feel trapped in the same life I was living yesterday.

The mind is winding with corridor after corridor,

Of all the things I’ve dreamt and more,

All the things I’ve felt before,

And more warning signs than not.

And all the doors are open,

Every room exposed,

Every sound surrounding,

And I’m left in the hallway,

Unable to move or run at all.

Then I feel a gentle hand intertwine with mine,

As if a missing piece of me had whispered,

“It’s alright.”

But there were no words needed,

As you guided me down the hall,

Where we found the only door closed.

I tried to turn back, too scared of something new,

I cried and kicked and screamed, but the message wasn’t getting through.

But with one swift motion, you had closed every door.

And there was silence.

And I couldn’t even remember why I was scared to begin with.

You helped me up and opened the last door,

A light so bright I couldn’t see the other side.

Had this always been here?

Hiding in the darker shadows of my mind?

Maybe this is just another dream,

Or is this who I was before the nightmares came alive.

Or possibly all the potential waiting for me to push the past aside.

But with you there to remind me,

I know it’s time to separate myself from the darkness,

And learn to love the light.
