Healing Is A Messy Business

Full of ups, downs and excruciating pain

She opens her eyes on another new day,

To find she survived against some impossible odds!

**

She took her past yesterdays and bolstered her heart,

Weaving art through the pain and grief,

She now understands the process, the inevitability,

She had to digest.

**

Healing is messy,

It’s chaotic,

It’s necessary!

**

Healing, for her, wasn’t long bath soaks surrounded by candle light,

Nor was it comforting hugs by strong arms.

**

No, it was ugly crying in bed late at night,

Minutes hidden in the shower in destitution,

It was the acceptance of destroyed hopes and dreams,

The churning of her stomach and the inability to eat,

And the forfeiture of hiding eyes that were always red and swollen.

**

It was the admittance of defeat!

**

She lived through the tough days and long nights,

Losing herself in the dark, feeling forever alone,

And rising with each new dawn, even when she didn’t want to.

**

Healing was rummaging through the boring every day tasks,

Until her nights drew shorter and shorter,

And sleep finally kissed her lips.

**

It was living through the rise and fall of her sobs,

The good days and the unbearable days,

The loss of her smile, the silence of her laughter,

And the bleeding of her heart.

**

Tough minutes moulded into tough hours,

Which turned into tough days,

Until one seemed a little gentler than the rest,

One where she’d experience brief periods of forgetfulness.

**

Until slowly, the bleeding degraded to a trickle,

The light in her eyes would twinkle on the rare occasion,

The sun would become her dearest friend,

And being alone no longer scared her.

**

Healing is a puddle of mess,

The depth of drowning,

Its ugly, its soul rewarding,

It’s life giving,

And as she discovered, it’s totally survivable!

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

Such a powerful and relatable poem...

  • This was so relatable. Some day are good but some aren't, and that totally okay. Loved your poem!

This is raw, real, and absolutely powerful! Healing isn’t a soft glow—it’s the storm before the dawn. You captured the chaos, the exhaustion, and the quiet victories so well. Messy, painful, but oh-so-human. Loved this!

To go through all that, and come out to the other end, despite your troubles; you are strong. Strong because you are not afraid to be vulnerable, and that makes you human. I am proud of you, and I love that you have written this.

Healing is definitely not an easy process

  • Great story. If you have time check out my profile and stories. Would appreciate that.

Amazing and very profound. Yes, healing takes time and ironically, enough, I find writing helps me heal. The heart scars may still exist, but they hurt a lot less because I write. Thank you for this brilliant article.
