Grams Chair

A poem from the perspective of a lonely old chair.

By Alexis JasminPublished 5 years ago 2 min read

This poem was written for the obituary of my grandmother.

From the perspective of her favorite old comfy chair.

Hey Gram its me , your big comfy chair.

Its been a few days, i've noticed.

You're no longer here.

Don't know where you've gone.

I just know that i'll be waiting.

I'll be waiting to hear,

The jingle of your keys or the shuffle of your feet,

Or those deep breaths you take after a long day out in the street.

Oh Gram, how I miss you, I'm missing you so,

But there are a few things that I think you should know.

This old chair, in this old room,

Has held you close.

While you watch your stories, and i've watched you sleep.

My pillow remain cozy until the next time you fill my seat.

In this corner I've sat through it all.

My arms, so soft, comfy and strong.

My linens, you've changed when coffee stained and torn.

It's your company, I'll miss, when my seat is no longer warm.

I'll be missing you in the morning, I'll be missing you at night. I'll miss hearing your sweet voice telling everyone that everything is going to be alright.

I'll miss your soft hands while you straighten my sheet.

At times, after visitors you'd always make sure that I am neat.

Hey Gram its me, your big comfy chair,

Just know, i'll be waiting even though you are no longer here.

Waiting for the jingle of your keys, or the shuffle of your feet.

Waiting for your head to lean on me as you drift off to sleep.

My pillows, still cozy. My arms still holding tight

Your loved ones and family when they need help to get through the night.

Come sit down. Come talk to me.

Giving comforting words, I'd know you'd say.

After all, Im your best friend. I've been here with you every hour of every day.

So as your room has gone empty, your lights no longer lit, just know im here waiting for you to come sit.

In this room that will miss you, but mainly your chair

Because after all,

Who will change my linens if you are no longer here?
