South Africa raises lions

to shoot

bred for canned hunting

naively living in pens and

shot, in sport hunting from vehicles

while eating their meals,

fed to them by human keepers,

making them easy trophies.

As babies, set out for cub petting and photos

growing into unmanageable adult lions

and sent to their born fate,

an unnatural, captive life in pens

poorly treated, not properly cared for,

bred to be shot and mounted on a wall.

Note: The country of South Africa on the African continent (this is to distinguish the country, as opposed to the region) is well known for its abhorrent practices toward lions. Public pressure and animal activists have worked for years to shut down their disgusting treatment of lions. Very few regulations exist, and often, the first shot only injures the animal. Wealthy Americans, as well as others, fuel this inhumane practice. Greed is king; cash is king. Please do not participate in baby exotic animal petting or get a photo. Think of the horrid life they live for your pleasure! Canned hunting farms exist in other places, including the United States. Endangered wildlife are killed, and exotic animals are imported to be shot for trophies. They are bred just for the fun of easily killing them. Roadside zoos send old and unwanted animals to these places.

Raising lovely animals like this for pure pleasure is actually much worse than poaching. Thanks for bringing it to attention, Andrea. I second the call to stop such practices.

I can barely function when I think of canned hunting by blood lust "hunters" for "sport". Those words don't fit the abhorrent greed-fueled killings of poor lions and other exotics lulled into a degree of trust until they are slaughtered with no place to hide. Aaauuuggghh. Your writing sent me over the deep end. Sadly it is well written and so so despicably true

Amazing at how little we have matured as humans.

This is a heart-wrenching call for awareness and action. The plight of these lions, bred and abused for sport, is deeply upsetting. Your words powerfully capture their suffering and the need for change. Here's to hoping more people listen, reflect, and stand against this cruelty. 🥺 Thank you for shedding light on such an important issue!

Why? Where is the pleasure in killing these beautiful animals? How can this be sport? Thanks for highlighting this, Andrea. This makes me angry and sad.

Again pushing my buttons, Andrea! I love that you have written so beautifully brutally honestly about such a practice! this sorta thing makes me feel violent! incredible and heartfelt writing! as a sidenote, I did a tautogram for the tautogram challenge last year called Little Lion! gmta!

It really is such a disturbing reality that far too many animals are subjected to it for human greed and entertainment. That's not why they were put on this earth!!
