Funny How Love Is

Like a sinister ghoul in the darkest part of the night
Hatred lurks in the souls it afflicts
Mocking love and taunting kindness
As something inferior and weak
Yet, we seem to be unable to
Heal and eradicate this compassionless cancer
That devours the heart and minds
Of those it infects
There is no magical medicine
Able to destroy this malicious illness
Nor, is there even a way to even slow
Down the replication of these diseased
Fast-spreading cells of hatred and intolerance
It is a parasite feeding on its host
Growing stronger and more fearless from
The terror it incites
And the praise and acceptance it receives
In some ways hatred has stronger than love
With its determination to wreak havoc
Even God has seemingly thrown up his hands
In frustration (for now)
Still miraculously love persists
And perseveres
Coming back again and again and again
Despite suffering escalating abuse
And injury
Love continues to try to smother hate
With kindness and compassion
Never ever giving up
Love is relentless in its need to care
And cure
