Fueling Flames

Ashes In My Wake

By Kelli Sheckler-AmsdenPublished 10 months ago 1 min read

Emotions bleed and wash away

The words I never dared to say

When walls kept tween, defining us

Like stains on abandoned canvases

Rest well my love, twill be okay

As the arsonist's bercuese gently plays

Alive it breathes, a raging fire

Like fingers brushing through her hair

Whispered intent and ravaged mercy

Gasping breath with intensity

Sometimes I give myself the creeps

I've learned, when life plays it plays for keeps

That's what I've always told myself

Puff of smoke, I’m someone else

Victor or victim, I play the game

Say what you will, I know my name

Wandering still, without a home

Win or lose, I stand alone

When surrounded by the fire

Be careful where you build your pyre

Searching for a resting peace

You must keep your demons on a leash

I could get lost in the twist and turns of this powerful little poem. When life plays it plays for keep is such a sage warning to us all! This is definitely poetry for grown ups, Kelli. Really well done!

  • The Domesticated Demonic--sounds like a great title for a book, something akin to "Small Gods".

Twine and twill had me going, nice choice. ‘bercuese’ a new word for me, I like the way it’s pronounced. A raging fire, brushing through her hair. A mix between danger and calm 🤔 Changing from one state to another, I love the way you described this to us. Giving us the contrast between victor and victim, between whispered intent and ravaged mercy. I could hear two different tones, it’s beautiful. Fire and pyre, chefs kiss! I hope you are alright Kelli. Other than that, I absolutely loved this piece. 👌🏽👏🏽♥️
